This week I have been sharing recipes that highlight products from the company Nutiva (website link). They recently sent me a box full of some of their most popular products to review and also to choose what to giveaway to one of you! I have been purchasing their protein powders for a while now, as the Nutiva Hemp Protein Powder is a great option for someone who wants the protein, but no dairy (whey) or chemicals/sugar included. These are organic and I love to include them in a shake with almond milk and banana. The first time I tried the powder it seemed grainy, but that isn’t a texture that bothers me. I’ve also tried blending the shakes longer than I normally would and this removes most of that texture. My favorite for shake is vanilla flavored. But I digress.
Todays recipe uses Nutiva Hemp Hearts (shelled hemp seed) and Hemp Seed Oil. After you check out the recipe, be sure to fill out as many entries as you can for a chance to win TWO of Nutiva’s protein powders!
Hemp seed reminds me a lot of sesame seed, at least in appearance. In taste, it’s completely different. They are a lot softer than most seeds and they have a nutty flavor. Subtle but tasty! Other than adding some to salads like I would sunflower seeds (which is great, by the way!), this is the first time I’ve used hemp seed in a recipe. Here are some ideas from Well + Good NYC: 15 ways to eat hemp seeds
Same goes for hemp oil. I’d never used this before! Other than this dressing recipe, I have also used the hemp oil as a carrier for some essential oils, which was nice (I really like the subtle nutty flavor). Not sure what to do with hemp oil either? I’ve enjoyed perusing the ideas on Nutiva’s own website, which also talks about the benefits of hemp oil.
The Giveway: 2 Nutiva 16 Oz Hemp Protein Powders (Regular & Vanilla)!
Although this was the most requested item in a poll of Facebook followers, this is also my 2 favorite products from Nutiva, so I’m very excited to have the opportunity to give them away to one of you! I use these powders in baking (see Protein Packed Breakfast Wafers for an example), and also in protein shakes made with some sort of combination of almond milk, fruit, honey, and nut butters. It’s more like dessert than a protein shake!

Raspberry Balsamic Vinaigrette w/Nutiva Hemp Seed and Hemp Seed Oil
I love dressing that has a little something extra in it. Like poppy seeds or sesame seeds. And because I was already using hemp seed oil, I decided why not try the hemp ‘hearts’ (shelled hemp seeds) in to have the same effect. I wasn’t disappointed!
In a blender, combine all ingredients except the hemp seed. Dressing will emulsify and be a creamy texture. Add the hemp seed and keep blender setting on lowest setting, then add the hemp seeds to mix in. Only ‘blend’ the seeds for a few seconds so they are evenly distributed. You don’t want to actually blend them. This is a tart dressing. If you like dressing to be sweet, keep adding honey in small doses and taste it as you go. Try and do this step before you add the hemp seeds so you can blend in any additional honey.
Serves best after sitting in the fridge for a while. Enjoy with salads or as a sauce for other dishes!
**Disclaimer** I was sent a box of goodies from Nutiva to trial in my recipes, but I was the one that sought them out. All information given on the Nutiva products is my own personal viewpoint and I do my best to be as transparent as possible. If I don’t like something, I will tell you! Other Nutiva product recipes in this series are Chocolate Covered Almonds and Snickerdoodle Protein Bites.
