We finally did it. We found a time to get to the Columbus Zoo that wasn’t a Saturday! It’s about an hour drive for us to get there, so we also wanted to pick a time that we knew we’d be able to spend the day. Granted, the Friday before Memorial Day might not have been the smartest (also the day after their new Africa exhibit opened…), but we were pleasantly surprised by the lack of busy. At least until about noon. Which seemed to be when the school groups got there. But still, I think it was probably a lot less crazy than it would have been that Saturday or Sunday because of the holiday. But I digress.
The point is that we finally went! And I think it was perfect timing for our little guy. If we had gone much earlier I don’t know if he would have been so attentive. As it was, he was so fascinated by the animals! And the other people at the zoo too (never know who/what you’re going to see in such large throngs of people! Yikes). I think it was a great learning experience for him. The Hubs and I had so much fun watching him get excited with everything :)
He really seemed to like everything in the ‘monkey family’ (it’s been a long time since I took biology, give me a break ;)), but loved these Orangutans.
He was able to get pretty close to things which was fun. He wanted to touch everything! Luckily there were lots of ‘non-animal’ fun things for him to get up close to touch. I especially love how he reacted to the turtles (bottom left) – there was lots of giggling and flailing, which is his current communication method of excitement :)
Mom’s favorite animal is the manatee, so dad wanted to get lots of pictures with him and I with them (even if just the fake ones outside ;)). Of all the animals, he couldn’t take his eyes of the fish in the different aquariams. Sharks, turtles, schools of fish – he loved it all! And that suits me just fine, since they are my favorite too :)
We took the stroller but didn’t really use it except for lunchtime and when we were finishing up (aka, he fell asleep from too much fun so we decided to head home). He slept GREAT after this trip! The top left pic is him zonked out in the stroller!
Just me and the babe hanging out on some fake manatees… ha! We had a hard time getting him to look at the camera for this one. The wear spots on the metal were so shiny – he was fascinated!
We did the entire zoo except for their new exhibit, Africa. So we saw animals from North America, Asia, Australia & the Islands (including the fake but moving dinosaurs), and the Congo. All in all we had a lovely time and are looking forward to going again.
