My son is 6 months! I’ve been excited to have him sit in his chair and eat sloppy cereal of oats. But I’m even MORE excited to start making him his foods right at home. My 2 main motivations are his palette and our money. I want to save money, and I want our son to experience all types of food. And lots of spices. I was such a picky eater as a child. And honestly, I know that I can’t force him to like things he just doesn’t like. But I want to give him the opportunity to find out during the formidable years.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself. Gotta start with something simple! This vegetable puree is very basic, but it’s been working great for my son and I. He didn’t like the first few bites but is eating it like a champ now. He would still rather have fruity oatmeal, but I know that the nutrients in this puree are going to help those cheeks fill out even more! And that makes a Momma happy :)

Baby’s First Vegetable Puree

This recipe is my adaptation of a puree listed in the Organic Baby & Toddler Cookbook


3 cups white potatoes, peeled
3 cups baby carrots
1 cup peas, frozen
1 cup corn, frozen


Start a pot of water on the stove on high. I used 10 cups, but you may decide you need more, depending on your desired consistency. I ended up with a very thick puree that I then ‘milk down’ (you know, instead of ‘water down’ ;)), when I’m about to serve it. I digress.

Peel the potatoes and carrots. I used baby carrots, so did not need to peel them. Cut them into 1/4″ cubes. Throw chunks into the pot of water as soon as you cut them. Once the carrots and potatoes are in, add the peas and corn. Bring the pot to a roiling boil, turn down to medium, and let boil for 15 minutes. Then remove the pot from the stove, uncovered, and let cool for about 20 minutes. Once cool enough to puree, add to a food processor (a blender is probably fine) and blend until completely smooth. I stored mine in pyrex containers that went straight into the freezer. I pull one of the containers out, thaw it, mix in some milk, and feed my little goober. Easy peasy!

It took him a while to warm up to this puree. And although we’ve been at it 2 weeks, there are still times he makes a face. An ‘are you kidding me, mom?’ face. Eh, why am I trying to explain it? I managed to catch one of these gems in a photo… enjoy! ;)


Since then we’ve also given Banana Oatmeal with Raisins a try. Have you made your own vegetable puree for your baby? What ingredients did you use? Was it well received or did you get a face like my guy, above? ;)

  2. I bought jarred baby food for my oldest when she was a baby but with my other daughter I made all her food myself. I made batches and froze them in ice cube trays. Then I could mix a match and create different flavours easily. Your recipe looks really yummy, but no more babies for me! LOL.

I have been doing purees now for about a month and Lindsey is almost 8 months – it took me awhile to warm up to making her food at home, but I don’t know why, it’s so easy and I like being able to mix and match and customize things for her! For veggies I did one blended batch – sweet potato and cauliflower; she liked that quite a bit. Then I did single ingredient batches of green beans, carrots, and sweet potato and I freeze 1 of 2 different ones on most days and then mix and match the flavors. Sweet potatoes get blended with carrots or green beans since she doesn’t seem to like the carrots or green beans on their own (though she liked both out of jars… sigh). I often blend the green beans or carrots with some baby oatmeal cereal and formula and she likes that a lot too. I still get the “are you kidding me mom” face off and on throughout the green beans though.

    • Hi Rebekah – thanks for sharing what you do! Actually, I feel a bit clueless when it comes to making baby food. And I love your method of making a batch of a single ingredient and then blending it later! I never thought of that! Will be trying that this week – not sure which foods I’ll be introducing yet though… ~Aubree
