I know what you’re thinking,”How on earth could something so scary looking be incredibly tasty – and what the heck do you mean by romantically stimulating? Seriously Aubree, you’re off your rocker again…”

Stay with me, let me try and explain! :)

First of all, looks are incredibly deceiving this case. Yes, it’s looks like – well, we won’t talk about it – but if you close your eyes and take a huge bite, you’ll be in heaven. I’m guaranteeing this (especially if you like spices of an Indian influence)!

Also, in the vein of my last recipe post, Chocolate Aphrodisiac Pie, this recipe has taken many natural aphrodisiacs and combined them for one tasty and seductive soup (well, at least if the person is blindfolded… :D). This is a second submission for Go Ahead Honey, It’s Gluten Free – because I just couldn’t help myself. I thought a savory dish would be fun to try for this months theme: Love Potions and Charmed Foods, cleverly created by Naomi of Straight to Bed Cakefree and Dried.

So what ingredients are considered natural aphrodisiacs in this recipe? Check out what has to say:
(Please note – things written in italics are not my words! I’m not quiet that bold… ;))

Almond: A symbol of fertility throughout the ages. The aroma is thought to induce passion in a female.

Broccoli: The ground seeds of various plants in the Brassica family (broccoli is a part of) were believed to increase virility. In the case of broccoli rabe its more likely a myth created to get people to eat this bitter vegetable

Carrots: Another good reason to eat carrots–believed to be a stimulant to the male. The carrot has been associated with stimulation since ancient times and was used by early Middle Eastern royalty to aid seduction. This is due to high vitamins and beta-carotene. Perhaps a justification for a piece of carrot cake?

Coriander: The book of The Arabian Nights tells a tale of a merchant who had been childless for 40 years and but was cured by a concoction that included coriander. That book is over 1000 years old so the history of coriander as an aphrodisiac dates back far into history.

Fennel: In the 1930’s fennel was found to be a source of natural plant estrogen’s. Use of fennel as an aphrodisiac dates back to the Egyptian times where it was used as “libido enhancement”.

Ginger: Ginger root raw, cooked or crystallized is a stimulant to the circulatory system. Perhaps a stir-fry with freshly grated ginger can stir something spicy up in the bedroom later.

Mustard: Believed to stimulate the sexual glands and increase desire.

Nutmeg: Nutmeg was highly prized by Chinese women as an aphrodisiac. In quantity nutmeg can produce a hallucinogenic effect. A light sprinkling of the spice in a warm pumpkin soup can help spice up your evening.

***Although, I will provide a disclaimer. I just had a huge bowl of this curry and I seem to be acting appropriately. So it might not actually work ;)

Lentil Curry Soup

1 cup masoor dal lentils (these are the orange lentils – though any kind will do!)
2 cups chopped brocolli
1 cup chopped carrots
2 cups water plus 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground coriander (or seeds)
1/4 tsp fennel seed
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp black mustard seeds
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp tumeric
1 tsp ground ginger


In a small to medium crockpot (I used 2 quart), add the cup of lentils, water, and almond milk. Set it to high. Finely chop the broccoli and carrots and add them to the crockpot as they are chopped. Once all the veggies are chopped and added, cover the crockpot and leave on high for four hours.

After four hours, add all the remaining ingredients (spices) and mix well. Leave on high, uncovered, for an additional 2 hours.

And serve! Just be careful who to ;)

    Hey, I want to make this stew but i work for 9 hours and will be gone for ten. What would happen if I put all the ingredients in at once, and had to let it cook for ten hours?

  16. Hi Lauren – if you set it on low, it should work just as fine! Maybe add a little more water, just to make sure the edges of the stew don’t burn in the crockpot… :)
