I make split pea soup all the time. I mean ALL the time. Its so easy to make with a crock pot and it just continually hits the spot. I typically will just add a small amount of salt and that’s it. I love its natural flavor.
Well, you know what its like in the kitchen. Everyone once in a while you just have to shake things up a bit… so I decided to put this twist on it for a change. And I really like the change. I guess my only challenge now is to not stick to THIS recipe each time! Cause we all know there’s nothing scarier than being stuck in a recipe-rut :)
Tangy Split Pea Soup
1 1/2 cups dried split peas
3 1/2 cups water
5 pieces of bacon, fried and chopped (easily omitted)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
If you have a crockpot, this couldn’t be simpler. Add the split peas and water, turn the crockpot on high, and leave it for about 5 hours. Weeeelll, you might want to check it occasionally and give it a stir. I don’t always remember though, and it seems to turn out fine each time.
When you come back to the kitchen, fry up the bacon. Let it cool and slice it into very small pieces. Add the bacon to the crock pot along with the salt, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Let it simmer on low until you’re ready to serve it.
Tasty and delicious! The fact that its incredibly simple only makes it more appealing :)
